Investment Manager

We’re looking for an Investment Manager to take on a significant existing client book and grow it. You’ll manage relationships directly, contribute to our investment process, and own the client outcome from end to end. If that’s the kind of investment management you want to do, read on.

Why Saltus?

Our mission is to improve everyone’s relationship with their wealth: to make it a positive force for their future and at the same time to prevent it being a source of anxiety. We want everyone who works at Saltus to be proud to work here, and to find fulfilment and meaning in the work that they do.

We are a successful, privately owned, LLP, with a number of offices in the South of England including London, Whiteley and Farnham. We are incredibly proud of our culture and work really hard to ensure that Saltus is a great place to work for our people, where they can have fun and grow in their career, with a passion for excellence and customer service.

Saltus is an independently owned financial planning and discretionary investment management house. We are dedicated to providing a high-quality service for private clients, trusts, and smaller institutions.

Saltus Partners was founded in 2004 and has grown organically and through a small number of carefully integrated acquisitions. Originally the business started out as an investment manager and has now developed the financial planning side of the offering, putting this at the forefront of the client relationship.

Today, Saltus manages and advises on over £11 billion of client assets, acquired through a combination of organic business growth and corporate acquisitions.

Can you tell me more about the role?

You’ll take on an established book of private clients, charities, trusts and corporate clients, and be accountable for those relationships – the reviews, the suitability, the conversations that matter when markets are difficult. These are investment management clients who do not take financial planning services from us, so the relatinship sits with you: you are the person the client calls, and suitability is yours to own rather than shared.

Alongside managing the existing book, you’ll grow it — through referrals from existing clients and professional connections such as solicitors, accountants and trustees, through centrally-generated prospects, and through opportunities you generate yourself.

Our investment process is centralised: asset allocation and fund selection are set by the investment team, which you’ll be part of and contribute to. Portfolios are implemented within that framework rather than constructed line-by-line at the desk. In our experience this is what allows our managers to spend their time on clients rather than on duplicated research, and it’s worth being clear about it up front.

The role is a certified function under the FCA’s Senior Managers and Certification Regime, and is subject to annual fitness and propriety assessment.

What you will be doing?

  • Managing discretionary portfolios for an existing book of private clients, charities, trusts and corporate clients
  • Leading client reviews and meetings, and owning suitability, risk profiling and the associated record-keeping
  • Acting as the primary point of contact for your clients across everything from portfolio positioning to service and administration
  • Growing your book through client and professional referrals, centrally-generated prospects and your own network
  • Participating in investment team meetings and contributing to portfolio management decisions
  • Communicating the investment team’s views to the wider business
  • Producing written and video investment content for clients and a broader audience

What skills and experience do I need to have?

  • Experience managing discretionary portfolios for private clients and other retail clients, in a client-facing capacity
  • Level 7 qualified – the CFA charter, the CISI Level 7 Diploma or equivalent – holding the FCA appropriate qualification and permissions relevant to this role, and a current Statement of Professional Standing
  • A strong technical grounding across asset allocation, portfolio construction and the tax treatment of private client portfolios
  • A track record of building and holding client relationships, and comfort in front of new prospects
  • Sound judgement under pressure, and the confidence to say when something isn’t right for a client
  • Personal accountability, and a collaborative approach across the investment team and the wider business
  • A transferable client following is welcome but not expected

Where will I be working?

Ideally, you’d be based in our London office for a minimum of four days each week, working the remainder of the week from home. We are passionate about championing flexible working for our people, so if there’s a slightly different working pattern that you’re looking for, then please come and have a chat to us about it!

What benefits do I get when working for Saltus?

  • A salary of £70,000–£90,000 depending on experience – the upper end reflects candidates bringing significant client-facing experience and an established track record – plus a discretionary performance-based bonus
  • A potential path to membership of the LLP
  • A seat in the investment team from day one, contributing to the decisions rather than receiving them
  • Full support for continuing qualifications, including study leave and fees
  • 28 days’ holiday (plus bank holidays), life assurance, income protection and a pension, alongside access to our flexible benefits platform
  • Based in our London office, at least 4 days a week in the office

Just as importantly, you’ll get to experience our culture, which we really do live and breathe: ensuring that Saltus is a fantastic place to work for every single one of our 500 people. We work hard, but we have an awful lot of fun along the way. If you think you’d like to come and join us, then please do get in touch… we’d love to hear from you!
